When Jess is forced to the gang’s hideout in the mountains, Vince tells him that the gang had stolen a silver-plated cannon that was used by Emperor Maximilian in his war against Mexican leader Benito Juarez. After explaining to him about them stealing the cannon, Vince tells Jess that he let the word get out that it was Jess who stole it and had sustained a neck wound as a result of being shot by one of the guards. Ordering his men to subdue Jess on the ground, Vince takes a branding iron and burns a wound to his neck. Jess reunites with an old flame, Tracey Winters (played by Ina Balin), and becomes acting sheriff of the town his former gang stole the cannon from. When the gang uses brute force on the town in an attempt to force a ransom, Jess has to stop the gang and return the cannon.
