The story behind the song
Elvis Presley recorded She’s Not You on March 19, 1962, at RCA Studio B in Nashville, Tennessee. The song came out as a single on July 17, 1962.
By 1962, the famous songwriting team of Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller—who had written some of Elvis’s biggest early hits like Jailhouse Rock and Don’t—had mostly stopped creating new material directly for Elvis after disagreements happened during the filming of King Creole. Doc Pomus, who created hits for Elvis like (Marie’s the Name) His Latest Flame and Surrender, asked Leiber and Stoller to work with him to make a new song. This teamwork created She’s Not You, which turned out to be the last time Leiber and Stoller worked together on a song written for Elvis Presley.
The single was a success, released with Just Tell Her Jim Said Hello as the B-side. The song climbed to No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 and reached No. 13 on the Billboard R&B chart, selling more than one million copies in the United States. It became a huge No. 1 hit on the UK Singles Chart, staying at the top for three straight weeks in September 1962.
