ONE BROKEN HEART FOR SALE

The story behind the song

HISTORY

One Broken Heart for Sale was recorded for Elvis’s 1963 Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer movie soundtrack, It Happened at the World’s Fair. The song was created by famous songwriters Otis Blackwell and Winfield Scott, who had already co-written Return to Sender.

Elvis laid down the track on September 22, 1962, inside the well-known Radio Recorders Studio B located in Hollywood. Instead of working with his regular backup singers, The Jordanaires, he got backing vocals from The Mello Men for this recording.

Released by RCA Victor on January 29, 1963, with “They Remind Me Too Much of You” as the B-side.

The song peaked at No. 11 on the Billboard Hot 100, making it the first regularly scheduled single of Elvis’s career that failed to reach the Top 10. On the Billboard Hot R&B Singles chart, it spent four weeks on the survey and reached a peak position of No. 21
