Her tombstone was at Forest Hill until 1977 when there was an attempt to steal Elvis Presley’s remains from the mausoleum where the singer was also buried. Elvis’s father, Vernon Presley, moved his wife and son to Graceland, at which time the grave marker was put into storage. On the morning of Tuesday, August 14, 1958, for the 60th anniversary of Gladys Presley’s death, her full tombstone complete with the Star of David was moved from the Graceland storage archive and placed in Graceland’s Meditation Garden. It wasn’t publicized and according to Angie Marchese, Vice-President of archives and exhibits at Graceland stated, “We decided we didn't want to make a lot of fanfare about it. It was just done to honor Elvis's mom and to fulfill what we think would have been his wish. In any case, the night of the candlelight vigil, everyone's going to see it.” Marchese, who has been a Graceland archivist for 27 years, has been interested in restoring the grave marker to public view since she first discovered it inside a crate in the Graceland storage archives.
