Recently discharged ex-G.I. Walter Gulick (played by Elvis Presley) returns to the quiet little town of his birthplace, Cream Valley, New York. Broke from gambling away his Army separation pay, he searches out Willy Grogan (played by Gig Young), in desperation for a mechanic’s job.
Grogan, along with being a small-time boxing promoter, also owns the Grogan Gaelic Inn and has a gambling addiction which has put him in debt to mobsters. When Grogan learns of Walter’s expertise in the ring, he dupes Walter into becoming a boxer. Things heat up when the mob tries to muscle in on the betting action by trying to force Walter to "take a dive" in his final fight.
